Last week I hosted a picnic in Maussane-les-Alpilles for a client who spent a week with three generations. They wanted a relaxed moment with a stylish picnic. So out I went with my cooling bags of freshly prepared Provençal dishes and my boxes filled with 100 years old crockery & cutlery, vintage glasses and over 100 years old table cloth. It is so wonderful to see these vintage objects come alive in the hills and mountains of Provence. With generations splashing around the pool, engaging in conversation, enjoying the moment. Enjoying each other.
I started Picnic en Provence with the vision to revive traditional Provençal cuisine that traditionally is very plant-forward. Traditional Provençal cuisine that celebrates the flavors, textures, colors, the seasonal ingredients and the tradition of sharing food. To promote that sharing, to invite human connection I choose very early on not to plate individual portions but rather to plate tables. To set vintage picnic blankets and tables with vintage French crockery, cutlery and glasses with big bowls and plates to share. It invites people to exchange at the very least for passing a dish. And that often leads to true exchanges.
It is humbling, warming and utterly moving that my food and set up become part of happy memories this family created. To receive a mail that they are still talking about this picnic. Thank you. Thank YOU for connecting with each other, with the beauty of Provence and with Picnic en Provence. Together we power dreams!
